In the course of the last several days, countless incidents of police violence have been documented with many of them going unnoticed in the mainstream. One case out of Buffalo, New York, however, is getting a lot of attention due to the unnecessary and disturbing nature of how it unfolded. An innocent elderly man was on the sidewalk attempting to return one of the officer’s helmets he had found. The officers then walked up to him and shoved him to the ground. The impact of the elderly man’s head was so hard that he immediately began bleeding from the ears and was knocked unconscious. Hours of secret recordings have blown the lid off of widespread corruption and brutality within the ranks of a New York police agency, exposing crimes ranging from the framing and beating of residents to officers collaborating with drug dealers, among other shocking acts of severe misconduct. Gothamist/WNYC revealed Wednesday that it has obtained the recordings that expose a culture of impunity and lawlessness within law enforcement ranks in Mount Vernon, a troubled majority-Black city in Westchester that lies just north of the New York City borough of the Bronx. According to the family of Leslie Furcron, she just buried her son in February after he was killed by police for running from them. They say cops approached him with guns drawn, scaring him, so he ran. Unfortunately, they would kill him over this. Illustrating the level of suffering faced by so many communities across the country, as Furcron peacefully marched to protest the death of her son and police brutality in general, she was shot between her eyes by a cop firing a rubber bullet. Police have detained store owners who used firearms to defend their premises from alleged looters in Los Angeles. The dramatic incident was caught in a live broadcast by a local news crew. The tense standoff at the city’s Van Nuys neighborhood was filmed by a FOX 11 news crew. According to the reporter at the scene, several vehicles drove up to a gold store, and a group of apparent looters attempted to enter the premises. They were confronted by the store’s owners, two of whom were wielding shotguns. Another person at the scene had a large machete-type knife on his belt. A Fort Lauderdale Police officer has been suspended this week after he was captured on cellphone video shoving an innocent kneeling woman who attended to protests on Sunday. His actions also may have served as a tipping point for the entirely peaceful protests devolving into chaos. The video shows just how delicate these situations are and also shows the power of “good” cops to stop their fellow bad cops in their tracks. Officer Steven Poherence, who assaulted the kneeling woman was quickly shoved out of the way by a fellow cop who verbally lambasted him for his senseless act of violence. As the video shows, Poherence is yelling at protesters, getting in their faces in an apparent fit of rage. The protesters are not attacking him, but he appears to want to provoke something.
