Two police officers of the Lawton Police Department in Oklahoma have been fired and charged with manslaughter after their execution of an unarmed man who repeatedly sought to comply with their commands to put his hands up was filmed on their own body cameras.
In December 2021, officers Nathan Michael Ronan and Robert Leslie Hinkle were sent to investigate an allegation of a man allegedly breaking a restraining order. Ronan and Hinkle would fill Quandry Sanders with more than a dozen gunshot wounds only moments after their arrival.
Sanders was unarmed and repeatedly had his hands in the air when he was executed by two of Lawton's finest.
In response to an allegation that he was in an armed standoff with women and children inside the house, police body camera footage saw Sanders exiting the residence. However, as soon as he was given the opportunity, Sanders left the house. It is unknown if he truly had a gun inside the house, but he was completely disarmed outside.
As shown by the video, Sanders cooperated with the police's request to leave the residence when He escaped via the rear door unarmed.
Before raising his hands to cooperate with authorities, he is seen emerging from behind a refrigerator on the back porch. Error-pronely, Sanders switches his cap from his right to his left hand before retreating behind the refrigerator.
Hinkle ordered Sanders to raise his hands, and the first salvo of shots was fired at him. While Sanders remained on the ground, he is seen lifting his right hand before two policemen pumped further bullets into his body, highlighting the reprehensibly brutal character of the officers.
Sanders was on the ground and attempting to raise his hands as cops continued to shoot at him. Sanders, age 29, would not survive the 12 gunshot wounds inflicted by Lawton's best.
The shooting was so egregious that Ronan and Hinkle were both dismissed in January, days after the incident. Since then, they have been arrested, jailed, and freed on a $25,000 bond each.
According to a news statement issued by the City of Lawton, they are both facing years in jail after being charged with first-degree homicide.
In January of this year, after an administrative review into the deadly shot, the City Manager of Lawton fired Ronan and Hinkle. This week, the District Attorney charged both officers:
The Comanche County District Attorney revealed their decision to seek criminal charges on May 6, 2022, based on the OSBI investigation. The District Attorney of Comanche County has charged both Nathan Ronan and Robert Hinkle with First-Degree Manslaughter.
"When they confronted Sanders, they asked him to put his hands up, which he did," S. Lee Merritt posted on Instagram on behalf of the Sanders family. "While his hands were in the air, Hinkle fired four shots at Sanders. When he fell to the ground, he was commanded to raise his hands to the sky. When he did, he was dismissed thirteen times more. This was a homicide. We demand justice."
