Incompetent Cop Tasers Fellow Officer Causing Him to Shoot Unarmed Man
A Nevada man is lucky to be alive after a scene - resembling an episode of Comedy Central's Reno 911 - unfolded during a traffic stop last month.
A missed taser shot would set off a chain reaction leading to an unarmed man bleeding out on the pavement, having been shot by a cop.
The incident unfolded in July authorities just released the body camera footage this week.
It is an exhibition in police incompetence and could have been a deadly one at that.
According to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office, around 8:30 in the morning on July 26, a deputy pulled over a driver who was reportedly driving recklessly.
Police say the man was uncooperative leading to the deputy calling for backup from the Reno police department.
Deputy Chief Tom Robinson, of the Reno Police Department, said the officers arrived at a parking lot in the area to find several deputies pointing their Tasers at a 43-year-old man, according to the Reno Gazette Journal.
"Can you go on your knees, please," a deputy is heard asking the driver.
"Let's talk about things," the deputy says.
"I'm going to run, I'm sorry," the man responds.
Circling around the man as multiple officers are equipped with deadly weapons was an ignorant move.
Basic training teaches officers not to be in the line of fire of their fellow cops, but these cops - who were acting like they were in a bad cop movie - had no problem getting into each other's line of fire.
The fact that guns were out at all, when they were dealing with a mostly polite, non-violent and unarmed traffic suspect, is ridiculous and speaks to the lack of training within the department.
At this point, the video shows the deputy preparing to fire and then firing the taser in the direction of the driver.
The deputy misses the driver and strikes the Reno officer in his knee.
The electricity surging through the officer's body then caused him to "Unintentionally" fire the gun once at the man's shoulder, Chief Robinson said in the video.
The fact that a deputy missed the man with the taser who was just a few feet away, highlights the lack of training mentioned above.
After the shot rang out, it took a second for the man to realize police had shot him.
He then falls to the ground, bleeding as officers render first aid.
Female deputy appears to go into full-on panic mode and begins screaming hysterically.
"You're OK, you're OK," a deputy is heard telling the driver.
"Medical is here for you, OK. Talk to me, what's your birthday?".
Another Reno police officer asks, "Who was it?".
According to the Journal, the man was then taken to a local hospital for treatment and has since been released.
Investigators with the Sparks Police Department then took him into custody on charges that include reckless driving as well as obstructing and resisting an officer.
He will most assuredly file a lawsuit against the department and the taxpayers will likely be buying this man a new house.
